A new teaser trailer for Distant Lands notes that the show is returning "soon. Cartoon Network recently released a very short teaser for Adventure Time: Distant Landswhich you can watch below. It doesn't reveal much, but it does confirm that some of the most popular supporting characters like Ice King and Lumpy Space Princess will return alongside the show's central heroes.
The teaser also ends with the letters "BMO" and the beloved robot's voice, confirming the character will play a key role. To be clear, this isn't a reboot or a new season. It's a four-episode special for HBO Max. However, unlike multi-episode specials during the main Adventure Time run that told a longer story, Distant Lands seems to be focusing on different characters with each new episode of its hour-long return.

Common storylines revolve around Finn and Jake going on the titular adventures, discovering strange creatures, and battling monsters to help others. Because the show had had success with specials and miniseries in the past such as Stakesthe writers started to pitch a number of stories that could be told in longer formats. Two big ideas that emerged during this time were storylines focusing on BMO in space, and another focusing on Marceline and Bubblegum's relationship.
Production for these longer stories, however, was halted when the series was cancelled. The next two specials are titled "Wizard City" and "Together Again". Reception to "BMO" has been mostly positive. Rollin Bishop of Comic Book wrote that the special's biggest strength is that BMO is "the most innocent and also the most prone to misadventure" compared to the other Adventure Time characters, which made the special itself a "solid watch from start to finish.

Alexander Sowa of CBR argued that Hugo is a futurist akin to Elon Musk or Steve Jobswhose characterization is "a clear satire of modern-day corporations and capitalists. Joe Matar of Den of Geek noted similar themes, saying that the story is about those living in Drift realizing that "their Elon Musk-esque tech capitalist overlord [Hugo] is destroying their world," which forces them to come together and rely on one another.

BMO is characterized as a loyal, trusting and helpful robot who is protective of Finn and Jake. BMO's voice was originally to be similar to a computer-synthesized voice, but as a result of a suggestion from Ward, Niki Yang 's natural voice also voiced Lady Rainicorn with some adjustments became the voice of BMO. They also share some traits with a Vectrex.
When not being played, they have an 8-bit face. BMO is about BMO's front includes an arrow pad, a floppy disk slot, multiple different shape buttons, two controller sockets, and of course the face, or screen. There is also a compartment with a red button hidden underneath the yellow D-pad. Their arms emerge from the center of the "O"s. There are also what appear to be holes for speakers at the tops of BMO's sides.

BMO is sometimes seen with two slots to plug in controllers and sometimes with a compartment on that spot that opens up to where controllers can be plugged in.
This is likely a reference to the gifts given to the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion in the film The Wizard of Ozsymbolizing a brain, a heart, and courage. According to Finn, "BMO does weird junk when no one is around. This potentially causes BMO to act like completely different people, and have their "multiple personalities" communicate with each other. BMO claims to not have emotions, but this is seemingly inaccurate. BMO demonstrates independence when they refused to turn down the music even after Jake tells them to.

While leaving for an excursion, Finn announces to Jake that he cannot find his missing sock, BMO decides to treat the situation like an old-time crime casedonning the persona of a hardboiled detective. Following Ronnie's advice, BMO ventures to the pantry, but is almost locked inside. When BMO suggests that Ronnie took it, she laughs at the idea, saying that if Ronnie were man enough to take a sock she would not be spending her nights with Bebe; eventually, Lorraine confesses that Bebe was the one who stole the sock.
Unbeknownst to either, Ronnie was hiding near the rafters and overheard the conversation. BMO heads to Bebe's, a supposed dance club downtown, and interrogates, who Bebe denies knowing anything about the sock. BMO runs from the cops, but trips and falls down the tree fort's ladder, hitting its head.
While unconscious, BMO has a strange dream. Eventually, BMO wakes up, and after a brief talk with N. Finn and Jake eventually return, and BMO presents them with the newfound sock. However, the fifth season episode "Princess Potluck" explains where Finn and Jake went. When "BMO Noire" was being storyboarded, Herpich and Page knew that Finn and Jake's adventure would later be explored, but they were assured by Osborne to not worry about it.
